World Journal: Mason Fong Runs for Sunnyvale City Council

July 26, 2018.

On the evening of June 25th, Sunnyvale City Council candidate Mason Fong held his campaign kickoff event. Many elected officials attended, including San Jose City Councilman Chappie Jones, Foothill-De Anza Community College District Board Trustee Gilbert Wong, Fremont Union High School District Board Trustee Hung Wei, and Cupertino Mayor Darcy Paul.

The candidates for Sunnyvale City Council, Seat 3 are Mason Fong and John Cordes, who previously ran in 2016. If elected, Fong may possibly be the youngest and will only be the third Asian-American in Sunnyvale City Council history.

Fong’s vision is to make Sunnyvale a more livable city by focusing on key issues, including education, public safety, affordable housing, and transportation. He hopes to add more technology to help Sunnyvale operate even more intelligently and efficiently and stated, “I want Sunnyvale to be the leader of Silicon Valley.” Additionally, he thinks Sunnyvale currently not only lacks multicultural activities, such as Chinese and Indian events, but also hosts very few American-holiday celebrations and festivals. He plans to add more activities to promote multicultural awareness and celebrate the diversity of the community.

He also mentioned the issue of affordable housing, and pointed out that Sunnyvale needs more mixed-use development, allowing people to affordably live, work, and play. This can improve Sunnyvale’s quality of life and aid in solving the issue of traffic congestion.
