Mason Fong, a third-generation Asian-American candidate, was elected as Sunnyvale City Council, Seat 3 with 10,330 votes, 53.58% of the electorate. He became only the third Asian and the youngest candidate to be elected on to Sunnyvale’s City Council.
At the age of 27, he has worked for Congressman Ro Khanna and former Congressman Mike Honda. He is incredibly happy to receive this opportunity to serve the residents of Sunnyvale. Fong stated, “I hope that my campaign will encourage more young people to participate in the community, and I hope to bring a younger generation’s perspective onto City Council.”
He pointed out that when he walked around the Sunnyvale neighborhood, he learned that the community is most concerned about traffic and public safety. Fong said, “In addition to traffic congestion, many people are also concerned with the increase in car and overall city burglaries ” Before officially swearing into office, Fong will continue to talk to residents to not only get to know them personally, but also to better understand their concerns and needs.
He said that in the next year, Sunnyvale City Council will look over significant discussion items, including the salary and benefits of Sunnyvale workers and the city’s budget for large-scale renovation projects. Fong stated, “I am new to the council compared to all the other members, who have many years of experience. However, I have the ability and experience to contribute to help better improve Sunnyvale.”
